🌿THE RAGA RETREAT🌿

Masters Edition

July 2026

Fri 3 - Sun 5th

(Weekend Intensive)

@ Flourish Sanctuary, Nimbin, Australia

(Guesthouse & Sanctuary): 449a Gungas Road,

Nimbin, NSW 2480.

Join us for a rare advanced training weekend for intermediate and experienced musicians, vocalists, and sound practitioners.

Rooted in the tradition of Guru–Shishya Parampara, this gathering honours the classical Indian model of learning through direct transmission — where knowledge is shared orally, experientially, and through close engagement with master musicians.

Rather than fast-track certification, this format supports deep listening, disciplined practice, refinement of technique, and immersion in the living tradition of Hindustani classical music.

This special Masters Edition brings together internationally touring maestros alongside leading Australian classical musicians for a rare opportunity of close musical study, guided performance, and advanced raga exploration in a relaxed intimate retreat setting.

Over the 2 nights / three days, participants move beyond foundational theory into:

• Deeper Raga Development (Alap, Jor, rhythmic expansion)
• Refined Vocal & Instrumental Technique
• Advanced Listening & Improvisation Skills
• Tala Fluency & Rhythmic Dialogue
• Gharana-Informed Phrasing (living lineages)
• Performance Practice & Stage Presence
• Daily Sadhana Structure for Serious Practitioners that will help musical fluency

This is not an introductory retreat.
It is a focused training environment for committed students and seekers ready to refine their artistry and take their practice to another level using the timeless system of Indian Classical music which is translatable to any genre.

Featured International Maestros

🎶 Sangeet Mishra

7th / 8th Generation Sarangi maestro from the Banaras Gharana, Sangeet Mishra hails from one of India’s most respected musical lineages. Trained under his grandfather Pt. Narayan Das Mishra, and further guided by Pt. Bhagwan Das Mishra and Pt. Santosh Kumar Mishra, he is recognised as a child prodigy and a leading exponent of both the tantakri and gayaki styles of sarangi playing.

Rooted in shastriya sangeet traditions, Mishra blends classical purity with contemporary collaboration, performing extensively across India and internationally as a soloist and accompanist. Now based in Mumbai, he is widely sought for recitals and cross-genre musical dialogue and has toured Australia many times making him a well known and loved player.

🎤 Supriyo Dutta

One of the leading vocalists of his generation in Hindustani classical music, Supriyo Dutta is celebrated for his emotive mastery of khayal, thumri, dadra, and bhajan.

Trained under Pandit Ramkrishna Basu (Indore Gharana), Padma Shri Pandit Vijay Kumar Kichlu, and Vidushi Subhra Guha, and continuing under Padma Bhushan Pandit Arvind Parikh, his international career spans India, Europe, the USA, Australia, and China. He is also an educator, filmmaker, and cultural ambassador dedicated to the global dissemination of Indian classical music. Be prepared to have your mind blown by his incredible vocal capabilities, understanding of fine musical details and techniques to unlock ones own range.

Hosted by Shivam Rath

Shivam Rath, Byron Shire-based slide guitarist and curator of Soul Sangeet and Raga Retreats around the globe. A second-generation Indian-Australian musician, Shivam integrates traditional raga training with yogic philosophy and meditative practice. Having studied in Varanasi and Kolkata under respected maestros including Pt. Chhote Lal Misra, Dr. Shibbanath Bhattacharya, and Pt. Debashish Bhattacharya, he has spent over a decade performing and teaching internationally as well as composing and producing music for himself and clients in various fields of styles and world music genres. His approach views music as both artistic expression and transformative sound practice.

Accompanying the retreat space on tabla is Rodney Wright, who studied the Banaras tradition of tabla in Varanasi under his Guruji Kedarnath Bhowmick throughout the 1990s. He has performed at major Australian festivals and music events and is widely respected for his dedication to developing and sharing music through the language of tabla. His playing reflects both traditional discipline and an open, collaborative spirit, helping to keep the group activities locked into the Tala (rhythmic) cycles in realtime during the weekend.

~ ? ~ TESTIOMONIALS ~ ? ~

I just wanted to say some words of gratitude, post integration of our RAGA journey. How beautiful to see you all in one spot last week at the Raga retreat. I feel like I am still bathing in all of your frequencies. Expanded & open to the flow of life and a whole lot of love. For me, it was the perfect spot and perfect timing to be reminded of how much light there actually is in this life, and how powerfully our vibration creates our reality. Effortlessly manifesting love & joy.. just by surrendering and expanding to true self, to truth. Thankyou to Shivam Rath & Mico Sundari for allowing us to bathe in your divine light - and initiating us into the use of the sacred sounds ourselves. It was beautiful to see how the use of our voice allowed each and everyone of us to open up to our unique vibration.. expand.. together creating a rhythmic resonance of truth & authenticity. All your tones will forever remain with me, thank you for resonating and co-creating our rainbow! With all of my gratitude for you all (the facilitators & everyone who held the space for everyone) Keep shining your unique colour & tone.. let our rainbow songs carry us through this adventure of life by

Raga Retreat 2022

Shivam is a brilliant musician and teacher. Having completed his recent 5 week Raga course I can say he imparts  his  expert technical knowledge clearly and patiently and in an a way that holds our attention.

As a musician and Slide Guitar player he presents his music  in a way that lifts and entrances his audience displaying not only technical brilliance but also displaying diversity and thoughtful intermingling of various styles through a fusion of Indian Classical with Electronic genres on  an underlying spiritual/yogic base. Brilliant!

THE NATURE OF RAGA

Crystal Slide

Raga's are based from nature and times of day/ night. Ragas require the musician to become a medium to invoke the mood and feeling above all else in learning a new scale. A small clip based on Indian Raga Durga.

MUSIC, MEDITATION & MANTRA

Melody, Movement & Rhythm

MEDITATION

Incorporating Music

Music is a field of vibration coursing through the current of this moment; offering as the perfect medium to demonstrate where our consciousness is or isn’t. Based on Yoga and advanced practices discover how Music can create a constant stream to keep the mind engaged with the act or practice of meditation. Experience when the mind is empty how the music will just 'flow' through and keep us in the 'zone'

IMG_5723.jpg

INSTRUMENT

Sing though your hands

Just about all Indian instrumentalist I have met can replicate their playing through their voice. The intrinsic connection between head and hands is not in the tone or tenor of our vocal range but in the feeling and conscious connection between the movement or language of sound

MANTRA

Voice & Sacred Sounds

Mantra means to release or liberate the mind; it could be as subtle or dynamic as one needs. Sanskrit mantra or Chanting sacred sounds or syllables through the power of will, voice or percussive rhythms is a profound meditative practice ’which allows us to discover the geometrical foundations of space and time.

SHIVAM RATH

Presenting the Trinity of Music ~?~

IMG_5756.JPG

MOVEMENT

The physical body is also a vehicle of sound and communication between music. The trinity in Indian philosophy being Mother Melody (Raga) Father Rhythm (Tala) and the combined creation between them: movement or dance. Through the practice of Yoga and tuning into the physical body on a subtle plane one can experience dance like states through feeling alone; a free flow allowing the body to lead and the mind to rest and let go.

IMG_5996.JPG

RHYTHM

The language of rhythm is a world of its own; and through the serious practice of Tabla Shivam has learnt how to speak intricate rhythms and syllables which allows him to play almost any percussive instrument with skill and dexterity. The practice his highly meditative balancing both brain hemispheres and is akin to chanting or doing ‘mantra’ meditation.
Another clear example signifying that first music should come from inside; because if you can speak it ~ you can play it!

IMG_5999.JPG

MELODY

Based upon original and traditional sources including the ancient Raga system and intuitive nature of heart to head connection; Shivam teaches in depth and highly subtle movements between the major scales, tones and semitones which create the rich atmosphere and mood that is Raga. Using Voice and Instrument to demonstrate the dynamics; this too becomes a universal language applicable to any sincere music aspirant.
