🌿THE RAGA RETREAT🌿
RAGA RETREAT 2027
Friday 22 – Wednesday 27 January 2027
5 Nights / 6 Days
(Australia Day Long Weekend)
🌿 LOCATION
Northern Rivers / Byron Bay Hinterland, NSW
Our 2027 Raga Retreat will once again take place surrounded by the extraordinary forests, mountains, waterways and natural beauty of the Northern Rivers between:
Alcheringa Dreamtime Land
Upper Main Arm, NSW
Bordering Mt Jerusalem National Park
Private rainforest studio accommodation is also available at nearby Ecoasis Mami Wata, subject to minimum bookings.
Please indicate your accommodation preference when enquiring.
Depending on participant numbers and accommodation preferences, we may expand the retreat towards the beautiful Ecoasis Mami Wata near Uki, approximately 30 minutes from our current retreat centre.
Ecoasis offers additional facilities, including the Rainforest Pavilion and Temple Garden Tea House, along with a higher-comfort experience in private or shared studios surrounded by nature, with beautiful sunset views towards Wollumbin.
Alcheringa Dreamtime Land offers a simpler, off-grid retreat experience with camping and rustic accommodation, immersed in stunning subtropical nature with sunrise views stretching towards the ocean.
Both offer their own unique atmosphere and connection to the surrounding landscape.
When booking or enquiring, please let us know whether you prefer:
-
Private or shared studio accommodation
-
Camping / own accommodation option
The final accommodation and venue configuration will be shaped by participant numbers and preferences.
If there is sufficient interest in private studios, we will expand the retreat into Ecoasis while maintaining the same intimate Raga Retreat experience.
I think that last sentence is especially important: “expand the retreat into Ecoasis” rather than “expand the retreat.” It makes clear that you're not necessarily increasing participant numbers dramatically — you're expanding the physical retreat environment.
Alcheringa → sunrise / ocean / off-grid / earthy
Ecoasis → sunset / Wollumbin / studios / Tea House / Pavilion
Hosted by Shivam Rath
& Allana Beltran
& Special Guest Facilitators and health practitioners TBA

What is a Raga?
Short Definition :
Raga's are based from nature, seasons and times of day/ night. Ragas require the musician to become a medium to invoke the mood and feeling above all else while learning new scales and delicate, intricate phrasing.
In learning Raga music the student naturally has to harmonise both brain and heart to perform and present the chosen Raga in order to conjure the Bhava (devotional feeling) or Rasa (essence) correctly thus making this a discipline and therapeutic practice of great inner and outer alignment.

🎶 WHAT YOU WILL EXPLORE
Raga & Melody
Discover the foundations of Indian Classical Raga
— not simply as scales, but as melodic frameworks connected with mood, atmosphere, nature and different cycles of time.
Learn through voice and call-and-response, gradually developing your ability to recognise, sing and improvise within a Raga.
Rhythm & Tala
Explore the language of Indian rhythm through voice, body and percussion.
Learn how rhythmic cycles interact with melody and how Raga and Tala can become foundations for improvisation and composition.
Voice, Mantra & Sanskrit
Explore your natural voice through chanting, mantra, Raga and vocal practices.
Rather than focusing on performance, we use the voice as an instrument for listening, resonance, confidence and connection.
Nāda Yoga & Sound
Drawing upon the ancient wisdom principles of Yoga and Indian Classical music, we explore sound as a practice of awareness.
Through meditation, listening, mantra, Raga and resonance, music becomes more than something we perform — it becomes something we experience directly.
SoundKalpa
Intention through sound.
We explore how intention, attention, vibration and musical practice can work together — particularly as we enter a new year.
Instruments
Most sessions are accessible through voice, but instrumentalists are encouraged to bring their instruments.
Selected Indian instruments may also be available with advance notice, including:
Indian Slide Guitar • Tabla • Bansuri • Harmonium
🌿 WHY RETREAT?
"It's not about how long you practice, but the quality of your practice."
The retreat creates a simple structure where music, yoga, meditation, nature and community support one another.
Stepping away from normal routines allows us to listen differently.
Early morning practice, Raga, meditation, movement, shared meals, nature and evening music create a rhythm in which learning can happen naturally throughout the entire day.
This is not a boot camp, nor is there an expectation that everyone arrives with the same musical ability.
Some participants come as experienced musicians.
Some come primarily for Yoga or meditation.
Some simply love music and want to open their voice.
The intention is not perfection or performance, but deeper listening, exploration and the discovery of your own relationship with sound.

I just wanted to say some words of gratitude, post integration of our RAGA journey. How beautiful to see you all in one spot last week at the Raga retreat. I feel like I am still bathing in all of your frequencies. Expanded & open to the flow of life and a whole lot of love. For me, it was the perfect spot and perfect timing to be reminded of how much light there actually is in this life, and how powerfully our vibration creates our reality. Effortlessly manifesting love & joy.. just by surrendering and expanding to true self, to truth. Thankyou to Shivam Rath & Mico Sundari for allowing us to bathe in your divine light - and initiating us into the use of the sacred sounds ourselves. It was beautiful to see how the use of our voice allowed each and everyone of us to open up to our unique vibration.. expand.. together creating a rhythmic resonance of truth & authenticity. All your tones will forever remain with me, thank you for resonating and co-creating our rainbow! With all of my gratitude for you all (the facilitators & everyone who held the space for everyone) Keep shining your unique colour & tone.. let our rainbow songs carry us through this adventure of life by

Raga Retreat 2022
Shivam is a brilliant musician and teacher. Having completed his recent 5 week Raga course I can say he imparts his expert technical knowledge clearly and patiently and in an a way that holds our attention.
As a musician and Slide Guitar player he presents his music in a way that lifts and entrances his audience displaying not only technical brilliance but also displaying diversity and thoughtful intermingling of various styles through a fusion of Indian Classical with Electronic genres on an underlying spiritual/yogic base. Brilliant!

🎶 WHAT YOU WILL EXPLORE
Rather than approaching music simply as something to perform, the Raga Retreat explores sound as a language — and listening as a practice.
Raga
— Melody, Mood & Nature
Discover the foundations of Indian Classical Raga and its relationship with time, nature, mood and atmosphere.
Through call-and-response, listening and guided improvisation, we explore the melodic language of Raga and gradually learn how a particular Raga can evoke its own Bhāva — feeling — and Rasa — essence.
Tala
— The Language of Rhythm
Explore Indian rhythmic cycles through voice, body and percussion.
Learn how Tala and Raga interact and how rhythm can become a foundation for improvisation, composition and musical freedom.
Voice, Mantra & Sanskrit
The voice is our most immediate instrument.
Through Raga, mantra, chanting and vocal practices, we explore pitch, resonance, pronunciation and expression — gradually developing greater freedom and confidence in our own natural voice.
Nāda Yoga
— The Yoga of Sound
Drawing upon the ancient wisdom principles of Yoga and Indian Classical music, we explore sound as a practice of awareness.
Music becomes not only something we create, but something we can enter into — through listening, meditation, vibration and presence.
SoundKalpa
— Intention Through Sound
We explore the relationship between intention, attention and vibration, using music, mantra and meditation to clarify and give resonance to our intentions for the year ahead.
Instruments & Musical Exploration
Most sessions are taught primarily through voice so that everyone can participate, regardless of musical background.
Instrumentalists are encouraged to bring their own instruments, and selected instruments may also be available by prior arrangement, including:
Indian Slide Guitar • Tabla • Bansuri • Harmonium
Whether you're an experienced musician or have never considered yourself musical, the emphasis is on exploration rather than performance.
🕉️ WHY RETREAT?
“It's not about how long you practise, but the quality of your practice.”
The retreat creates a simple daily rhythm where music, Yoga, meditation, nature, food and community support one another.
Stepping outside our normal routines allows us to listen differently.
Early morning practice, Raga, movement, mantra, shared meals, nature and evening music create an environment where learning continues beyond the formal workshop itself.
There is discipline within the retreat rhythm, but this is not a boot camp.
There is also no expectation that everyone arrives with the same musical ability.
Some participants are musicians.
Some come primarily through Yoga or meditation.
Some simply love music and want to open their voice.
And some return year after year to deepen what they've already discovered.
The intention is not perfection.
The deeper practice is in how much we listen, explore, develop and discover about ourselves and our own expression through sound.
🌤️ WEATHER & WHAT TO EXPECT
Summer in the Northern Rivers hinterland can be warm and beautiful, while also bringing occasional tropical rain and rapidly changing weather.
Our mountain and rainforest locations generally offer cooler air, abundant shade and access to beautiful waterways and swimming places.
We recommend preparing for a range of conditions:
Light summer clothing • swimming gear • comfortable walking shoes • warm layers for evenings • rain protection
Weather conditions are monitored closely in the lead-up to the retreat, particularly where they may affect road access, swimming or outdoor activities.
The flexibility of our 2027 retreat locations also allows us to adapt parts of the program according to weather, group needs and venue conditions.

THE NATURE OF RAGA
Crystal Slide
Raga's are based from nature and times of day/ night. Ragas require the musician to become a medium to invoke the mood and feeling above all else in learning a new scale. A small clip based on Indian Raga Durga.
MUSIC, MEDITATION & MANTRA
Melody, Movement & Rhythm
MEDITATION
Incorporating Music
Music is a field of vibration coursing through the current of this moment; offering as the perfect medium to demonstrate where our consciousness is or isn’t. Based on Yoga and advanced practices discover how Music can create a constant stream to keep the mind engaged with the act or practice of meditation. Experience when the mind is empty how the music will just 'flow' through and keep us in the 'zone'

INSTRUMENT
Sing though your hands
Just about all Indian instrumentalist I have met can replicate their playing through their voice. The intrinsic connection between head and hands is not in the tone or tenor of our vocal range but in the feeling and conscious connection between the movement or language of sound
MANTRA
Voice & Sacred Sounds
Mantra means to release or liberate the mind; it could be as subtle or dynamic as one needs. Sanskrit mantra or Chanting sacred sounds or syllables through the power of will, voice or percussive rhythms is a profound meditative practice ’which allows us to discover the geometrical foundations of space and time.

Presenting the Trinity of Music ~?~

MOVEMENT
The physical body is also a vehicle of sound and communication between music. The trinity in Indian philosophy being Mother Melody (Raga) Father Rhythm (Tala) and the combined creation between them: movement or dance. Through the practice of Yoga and tuning into the physical body on a subtle plane one can experience dance like states through feeling alone; a free flow allowing the body to lead and the mind to rest and let go.

RHYTHM
The language of rhythm is a world of its own; and through the serious practice of Tabla Shivam has learnt how to speak intricate rhythms and syllables which allows him to play almost any percussive instrument with skill and dexterity. The practice his highly meditative balancing both brain hemispheres and is akin to chanting or doing ‘mantra’ meditation.
Another clear example signifying that first music should come from inside; because if you can speak it ~ you can play it!

MELODY
Based upon original and traditional sources including the ancient Raga system and intuitive nature of heart to head connection; Shivam teaches in depth and highly subtle movements between the major scales, tones and semitones which create the rich atmosphere and mood that is Raga. Using Voice and Instrument to demonstrate the dynamics; this too becomes a universal language applicable to any sincere music aspirant.
